Junot, Andoche, duke of Abrantès

Junot, Andoche, duke of Abrantès
(1771-1813)
   military figure
Born in Bussy-le-Grand, Burgundy, Andoche Junot was recognized for his military talents at the siege of Toulon (1793) by Napoléon Bonaparte, who made him his aide-de-camp (1794). Junot followed Bonaparte to Egypt and later was made successively a division commander (1801), governor of paris (1804), ambassador to Lisbon (1805), and eventually commander of the French Army in Portugal (1807). There, he won a victory at Abrantes and entered Lisbon in November 1807, but was defeated by General Wellington at vimeiro (August 1808) and was forced to sign the surrender of sin-tra (August 30, 1808). He subsequently fought in spain, took part in the Russian campaign, and was serving as governor of the Illyrian Provinces when he went mad. General Junot then returned to his family in France and committed suicide shortly afterward. His wife, Laure Permon, Mme Junot, duchess of Abrantès has left their Mémoires (Souvenirs historiques sur Napoléon, 1831-35). See also napoléon i.
